DEEP STRATEGY MEET II


The Consulting Club at FMS, Delhi organized the second edition of DEEP STRATEGY MEET on the 9th of September 2007.The theme of the meet was ‘New Strategy Frontiers in India- Moving up the Value Chain through Capability Development.’ The event was divided into 2 sessions with eminent speakers sharing their invaluable knowledge and insightful ideas with both the first year as well as the second year MBA students.


The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. A.K. Shiva Kumar, Member- National Advisory Council and also India’s advisor to UNICEF. Dr. Kumar is also a faculty at Harvard University for Economics and Public Policy. While addressing a gathering of almost 200 students, Dr. Kumar spoke about the difference between progress and development. He shared some startling realities about the level of inequality in our country.


The Guest of Honour for the event was Dr. Devendra Gupta, Senior Consultant, National Council of Applied Economics and Research and Director, Resources and Environment Group. He has also served as the Advisor, Planning Commission and a Consultant to the World Bank and the European Union. Mr. Gupta spoke about the role of knowledge sector and also compared the quality of education in India with international standards.


Other speakers for the session included Mr. Pavan Gandhok, Partner, Halcyon Pvt. Equity; Mr. Pavan Chaudary, CEO & MD, Vygon India; Mr. Gaurav Moda, Associate Director, Hay Group.


Mr. Gandhok spoke about the difference between Capabilities based advantage (speed, time, flexibility) and Structural Advantage (Scale, Scope, Deep Pockets). He also explained how Capabilities Based Advantage is increasingly becoming more important. Mr. Gandhok has had consulting experiences across India, South East Asia and Australia with Boston Consulting Group, Stern Stewart & Co. and AT Kearney.

Mr. Chaudary shared his views on the importance of responding to changing priorities as well as his belief in the human capabilities.

Mr. Moda interacted with the students regarding the need to increase the pie of market demand. His was a very engulfing speech as he included experiences from the corporate world to make students understand the different dimensions of value chain. Professor Vivek Suneja, Professor of Strategy and International Business at FMS and the Dean- Planning of the University of Delhi moderated the Panel Discussion. The panelists included all the esteemed speakers of the session. The discussion was lively with many questions from the students.

The Second Session for the day had two of our alumni from the batch of 1997 and 2000 working with Accenture Business Consulting - Mr. B.V. Sriram and Mr. Anurag Mathur. They shared with us Merger and Acquisition strategies, Candidate Screening strategies, Target Evaluation Methods, the details of Deal Structuring and many other such insightful minutiae of ‘M&A’. It was a wonderful experience to have our own alumnus share with us their experiences of the various M&A deals that they have cracked and also analyze the ones that did not materialize. As always when alumni come back to the campus, the atmosphere was friendly and intellectually stimulating with numerous questions being answered and anecdotes told.

The Second Edition of the Deep Strategy Meet was a grand success. All the esteemed speakers congratulated the Consulting Club at FMS for organizing an event at such a grand scale.
