29th November 2003

What is the leadership that India needs today? Is it the energy of a Alexander, the commitment of a Gandhi or the vision of a JFK? What goes into the making of a leader?
Is it charisma, personality traits, overarching ambition or the grand vision? Or is it inborn talent and motivation that drives them to the heights of crowning glory? How do corporate address the need of leadership in business? The Annual FMS Convention aims at finding out what is the leadership that will drive businesses as well as society tomorrow. Fore thoughts………..
“ The leader must have infectious optimism and the determination to persevere in the face of difficulties. He must also radiate confidence, even when he himself is not too certain of the outcome…the final test of a leader is the feeling that you have when you leave his presence after a conference. Have you a feeling of uplift and confidence? “
Field Marshall Montgomery

The question of Leadership – among the most debated and perhaps also amongst the least understood of dilemmas in organizations today. Where is the concept of leadership going? Ofcourse the traditional view of what a 'leader' is has changed. The typical 'picture' - the great individual, the hero or heroine, the inspiring, charismatic figurehead, the 'special' individuals that set the direction, make the important decisions and energize the 'troops,' just doesn't seem to capture the 'complexities' of leadership today.

We've seen a shift to coaching, mentoring, enrolling, inspiring, engaging, shared visioning and a host of related 'ings' that add new dimensions and round out a more contemporary skill set for ‘leading’ enterprises and individuals. But these new concepts and perspectives also seem to lack the 'bite' - the 'gem' - the 'juice' - the simple and profound insights that work - in the sense of clarity, purpose and focus.

The problem is that leadership defies any single description. The kind of leadership that works well in a small, struggling company may seldom work as well in a large mature company. Similarly the leadership that India needs today may be far more differentiated than the leadership that laid the foundations of our democracy. Times are changing with much higher uncertainty than ever before. "Good" is not good enough anymore. Everyone is getting "good". "Good" becomes mediocre when we raise the bar and that is the price of admission. Be "great" or go home! It's the "wow" factor that makes the difference. And it for this that we need to have the leadership that transcends the ordinary.

Each organisational challenge may require it own unique leadership solution. Can there ever emerge the ultimate leadership truth– the one unique leadership mantra? Or is it that each problem, each period and each epoch would define its own set of variables to be dealt by an equally variable leadership characteristic?
